9th March at 11:30
SSP activists will return to HMP Cornton Vale on Sunday 9 March for the annual International Women’s Day protest outside the prison.
The number of women in prison in Scotland has increased by 90 per cent in the last decade – the vast majority of them women serving short sentences for crimes of poverty: prostitution, shoplifting, drug abuse and non-payment of fines.
Many of the women who pass through the gates of Cornton Vale have been subjected to violence and abuse from an early age; many have addiction and mental health problems. The SSP believes that prison is not the place for these women, and that poverty is not a crime.
We will gather outside HMP Cornton Vale at 11.30am on Sunday 9 March – there are regular trains from Glasgow & Edinburgh to Stirling.
HMP Cornton Vale is a few miles from the train station – we will try to arrange car/taxi shares from the train station.
