On IWD KwaZulu-Natal calls for an end to women abuse

The KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Premier’s office has issued a strong message against the abuse of women in the province as International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated worldwide today.

Premier Sbu Ndebele’s spokesperson, Logan Maistry, says more than one billion people in the world, the great majority of whom are women, still live in unacceptable conditions of poverty, illiteracy and abuse.

Mistry said: “As the province of KZN we pledge to continue to confront challenges in the struggle for a non-sexist society. It is against such abuse as the one experienced by the women who were stripped naked by chauvinist males at Umlazi in Durban and Noord Street in Johannesburg that we need to intensify our struggle for total women emancipation.

“In KZN, organisations such as Men for Change from the South African Police Services and the KwaZulu-Natal Men’s Forum are leading change in this regard. We salute women on this day and every other day.”

International Women’s Day is marked on March 8 every year. It is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women. Started as a political event, the holiday blended into the culture of many countries (primarily Russia and the countries of the former Soviet bloc).

The IWD is also celebrated as the first spring holiday, as in the listed countries the first day of March is considered the first day of the spring season.
